The research analyses the losses of the Ukrainian agricultural sector from the war, the level of mining of fertile land, the consequences of the Kakhovka Dam blowing up, and the negative impact on global food security of the militarization of the Black Sea and the blockade of Ukrainian ports.
Key findings:
- Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine has lost over 19.3% of its planted areas in 2022.
- After the destruction of Kakhovka HPP, almost 70% of the Kherson region was left without water for irrigation.
- Over 5000 ha of arable land was unused because of the ongoing war.
- Most notable losses have occurred in the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.
The limited presence of agricultural products from Ukraine on the global market keeps world prices in a certain tone and prevents them from falling. This leads to higher costs for importers, who could buy more food for the same or even less money.
The research was commissioned by “BARVA INVEST” for ICUV and ANTS – National Interests Advocacy Network.
